My love for flowers got a chance to grow when I started Petal Passion floral design in 2005. At first I was solely focused on creating beautiful fresh flower bouquets but soon felt disillusioned when the reality of pesticide use in the flower industry started to dawn on me and I felt compelled to start growing the flowers myself as well as designing with them.
I began by growing more and more flowers in my own yard but when I quickly ran out of space, I looked around for ideas and naturally it were the neglected and underused areas in my neighborhood that beckoned.
I took my audacious plan to a few of my neighbors and several, kind, Oatman ave residents generously offered their underused spaces for me to grow flowers.
Although Petal Passion has since made Oatman Ave one of the prettier streets in the Arbor Lodge neighborhood it is not only a beautification project. Petal Passion produces copious amounts of flowers for my own floral designs but we also produce many more bunches of flowers for sale at the Portland Flower Market.
Many annuals such as Cosmos, Poppies, Borage, Violets, Cerinthe, Forget Me Nots, Foxglove, Celosia, Love in the Mist, Snapdragons, Larkspur, Asters, Sweet William, Zinnias, etc, etc are seeded every year as well as numerous perennials that are being cut and brought to market every week during the NW growing season.
Usually starting with Leucojum, Kerria Japonica, Rosemary, fruit branches, Lilac, Daphne, Bleeding Heart, Solomon Seal, Chaintree branches, Spanish Bells, Lambs Ear, Irises, Alliums, Mock Orange, Peoni, Veronica, yarrow, Roses, Weigelia, Andromeda, and many other varieties. There is something new every week. Although we do not grow large quantities of anything we grow a little of many varieties of blooms.
